HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The story of our Seaside Tribe – of Adi, Irene & Noi, and the extended Seaside Tribe family – could start in so many different places. It could be a story of boy meets girl. It could be a story of hard work. It could be a story of love that conquers distance.
But at its heart, ours is a story of a love for surfing, a love of travel, a love of community.
Humble Beginnings: A Cow for a Board
Way back when, before Canggu was a tourist hotspot and when Kedungu Beach was covered by more rice fields than sand, there was a group of ragtag boys who loved to surf.
Adi and his friends would skip school to take turns on old, dinged up boards – boards without noses and not enough fins – melting candlewax on top because surf wax cost too much. There were no coaches, no instructions, no competition; just teenagers having fun.
As much as his parents didn’t love that Adi spent so much time on the water, they could see how much he loved it. They were farmers in the rice fields, and didn’t have any money to spare. Still, they wanted Adi to be happy and so they did the only thing they could, selling a cow to buy him his own board. It had been broken in three places, but it was all his.

She Didn’t Even Want to Come to Bali
It’s safe to say, Irene – a young Swiss traveller who just wanted to learn to surf – didn’t expect to meet the love of her life at a surf camp in Bali. Actually, she didn’t even want to come to Bali! Mexico was Irene’s first choice. The friend she was travelling with had other ideas though, and so they found themselves at a surf camp in Bali.
By this time, Adi had become an assistant surf coach – a job that he only discovered a few months before when he met an Austrian guy leading surf tours on the beach. He was one of the first foreigners to ‘discover’ Kedungu, and when Adi asked him what he was doing, the surf guide offered him a job.
Irene and Adi immediately hit it off, and her 1-month trip turned into 2. And it wasn’t long before Irene decided to stay in Bali for good.
We can’t promise you’ll meet the love of your life, but we can promise to be your home away from home.
A Shared Dream: Surfing, Community, Sustainability
Adi & Irene’s story is one that starts with a shared love of surfing – a love that they were both excited to share with others. Irene saw how good Adi was as a surf guide and so she encouraged him to step away from the surf camp and find his own clients.
It wasn’t long before Adi’s days were fully booked with private surf lessons, who began to ask him if he knew of a good place to stay. And so began Adi & Irene’s next dream – a sustainably-designed, community-minded getaway where their surf students could surf & stay. A place where you could surf in the morning, chill out during the day, and come together over shared meals or stories of the day’s best (and worst) waves.

The Seaside Tribe opened in 2018, although back then it was known as Quiet Leaves, and it’s a place that brings lovers of surf and travel back again & again. A place that feels like home as soon as you step through the door.
